Mara Junior College (MRSM) offers 10 percent of the places to non Bumiputera students annually. Now there are 230 Indian students studying in Mara Junior colleges particularly in 6 centres. One of the centres is MRSM Kuala Kubu Bahru. It is surrounded by mountains and there is beautiful scenery around the college.

30 Indian students are in Kuala Kubu Bahru MRSM staying and studying with students from different ethnicity background. Majority of them are Malay students. Mrs Noor Murni, who is in charge of student affairs said that the Indian students could adjust well to the new environment and mix with the dominant group of students. She elaborated that all students irrespective of race are treated equally.

In order to provide moral support and assistance to the Indian students in the college, Dato G. Palanivel, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development visited the college. He had a special dialogue session with the 30 Indian students. During the dialogue session he advised the students to work hard in order to excel in their studies. Although many students applied to MRSM but only few students have been offered places in MRSM. So this is a golden opportunity for all of you and you are regarded as the cream of the nation, added Dato Palanivel.

He asked the students to pay attention in the classroom. He said that the students needed to know the exam methods and approaches. Apart from that they were asked to do a lot of exercises in order to gain deeper understanding on subjects. “Practice makes perfect”, quoted Dato Palani.

Another important thing mentioned by Dato Palani was that one should read broadly to succeed in life. He encouraged the students to read various materials such as newspaper, magazines, story books and so on. By reading broadly students one can enrich their general knowledge and will also have a broader mind. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is wealth. Knowledge is confidence, he elaborated.

At the end of the session, Dato Palanivel made some promises to the students. He said that an arrangement would be made to take the students to the nearby temple at least once a month. Religious knowledge is of paramount importance to practise moral values in life. There the students will be taught some religious values.

Other than that, He said that steps would be taken to provide Tamil classes as requested by the students. Besides mastering English and Malay, the students were asked to learn Tamil and be tri-lingual as well so that they can keep the culture alive. A support group will be set immediately to assist and monitor the Indian students on a regular basis. This support group will also be the unofficial guardian of the students, Palani stressed.
