The Launch of the book: POLITICS & SERVICE - The Experiences of Banting Jaya

By Dr Denison Jayasooria & Lim Ming Haw

Politics and Services: The experiences of Banting Jaya attempts to capture the critical concerns that facilitated political action of Malaysian Indians in the formative period of Malaysia. This is done through a historical review, family reflections and recollecting political experiences of Daniel Jayaratnam of Banting.

In the words of Dato Seri S.Samy Vellu “the story of Daniel Jayaratnam leaves us a legacy of service through political action. In so doing, he exemplified the true essence of exercising democratic rights and responsibilities”.

A number of questions which the authors address in the book are:-

What factors and issues influences and moulds a person’s political views?

Are these issues and concerns similar today as they were during the formative years of our nation?

What strategies and approaches were adopted then and are there relevance for us today?

What made a Jaffna Tamil Christian to be actively involved in the independence struggle of India through the INA during the colonial period?

What enabled a middle class person to mobilise support through the Malaysian Indian Congress for the independence of Malaya and later for upliftment of Malaysian Indians through the MIC related institutions and initiatives?

The book will be launched by  Dato Seri S. Samy Vellu on June 17th, 2002 (Monday), 4.30pm at Dewan Nethaji, Menara Manickavasagam, No.1, Jalan Rahmat, Kuala Lumpur.
